Identifying how the community response is affected by the stereotype of “real rape” and how to overcome these negative effects.

 

BONE BASICS: WHEN BONES AREN’T HEALTHY - Kevin Coulter, Michael Gottschalk

A basic understanding of skeletal development and metabolism is key to a comprehensive evaluation of bone injury when abuse is suspected. This workshop will focus on basic bone physiology and metabolism, including the measurement of bone density, and apply it to case examples of Vitamin D deficiency, osteogenesis imperfecta, and copper deficiency.

 

CHILD SEXUAL BEHAVIOR: THE SCIENCE OF SORTING IT OUT - Barbara Ryan

Children may come for a medical evaluation due to sexualized behaviors. It is important for medical providers to know how those behaviors fit along a continuum, in addition to when and how to recommend counseling resources.

EFFECTIVE TRAUMA COUNSELING MODALITIES: WHAT MEDICAL PROVIDERS NEED TO KNOW - Robyn Igelman                          

Current evidence-based and promising approaches for treating maltreated and traumatized children and families. Information on approaches that are contraindicated or have not proven effective for treating child abuse victims. By end of this workshop, medical providers will know when to refer a patient for trauma counseling and what they can expect when they make a referral for trauma counseling.

 

FAMILY VIOLENCE IN THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY - Kulsoom Hassan, Weheeda Samady

Showing the BBC Panorama TV segment that aired after British child abuse physician Professor David Southall was struck off the registry by the General Medical Council. Medical providers who work in the field of child abuse will recognize that being discredited for this important work can take many forms. How can this potential challenge affect the style of one's practice? How does one prepare for it? How does one recover from it?
